Our goals

To examine the contributions that theatre methods can make to deepening current understandings
of how people live with everyday violence, with the ultimate aim of promoting peaceful societies
and ensuring inclusive and equitable education.

Thus we are seeking to road-test, evaluate and refine a research approach that is based in theatre processes, for exploring how people live with everyday violence. The network will assess the model for its ability to offer meaningful insight into the impact of violence on school communities, students and teachers, with the ultimate aim of promoting peaceful societies and ensuring inclusive and equitable education.

RESEARCH

The research will evaluate the contributions of socially engaged theatre methods in themselves; but
assessing their usefulness for investigating sensitive and complex issues – in this case education in
the context of violence, rather than assessing their primary (already established) value as a social
intervention method.

ACTIVITIES

The project is divided into three main stages. The first consists of a network meeting to present and
discuss with our peers the approach, and its evaluation. The second stage is the pilot project taking
place in a state school in Recife. Finally, there will be a second network meeting to discuss the
findings of the research.
